For websites

The fishing conditions on your own website

Do you run the website of a mountain board, a fishing club, an NJFF branch or a campsite? Then you can show the conditions at your water there. The box is free, needs no key and updates itself.

Pick a water

The box exists for every water that has a page on Finnfisk, which means the waters with a fishing-card offer on inatur nearby. Where fishing is forbidden, free on terms that a source gives, or where the card nearby does not cover the water, the box shows that and the source instead of the card. Where a source shows that another card covers the water, the box links that card. It does the same where the water lies inside the area that another card has on inatur’s map.

The search needs JavaScript. The address of the box is the address of the water page with /embed after /en: /en/vann/lom/tesse becomes /en/embed/vann/lom/tesse.

What it looks like

The box for Tesse in Lom, as it stands on another website, with the link under it.

The code

Paste the code where the box should go. It is plain HTML, so it works in a publishing tool that lets you add your own HTML.

<iframe src="https://finnfisk.no/en/embed/vann/lom/tesse" width="360" height="400" title="Fishing conditions for Tesse from Finnfisk" loading="lazy" style="border:0;max-width:100%"></iframe>
<p><a href="https://finnfisk.no/en/vann/lom/tesse">Finnfisk: fishing conditions for Tesse</a></p>

  • The box is 360 pixels wide and 400 pixels high. On a narrower page the width shrinks.
  • loading="lazy" makes the box load only when the reader gets down to it.
  • Test the code on your website. An HTML file opened straight from the disk cannot show the box.

What the box shows

  • The name of the water and the municipality.
  • The weather now from Open-Meteo: the light, the wind and the temperature for the day, and a short read of the day.
  • Which lure colour the colour guide suggests right now, in clear, stained and murky water. The advice is for the one of the colour guide’s six species that GBIF has the most records of at the water. Where there is none, it is for brown trout.
  • The link to the fishing card on inatur. Where fishing is forbidden, free on terms that a source gives, or where the card nearby does not cover the water, the box says that instead, with a link to the source.
  • A small Finnfisk link to the water page.

At a water where fishing is forbidden, the box shows the weather, the ban and the source. The read of the day and the colour advice are left out, because nobody may fish there.

The colour advice is a rule of thumb, not an answer. Season, size limits and gear rules are set by the rights holder and by local rules, and the box does not show them.

The link under the box

The code has an ordinary link under the box: “Finnfisk: fishing conditions for Tesse”. It shows readers where the figures come from. Keep it visible, and keep it pointing at the water page. You can rewrite the text.

The link sits outside the box on purpose. Everything inside the box is a separate page from finnfisk.no. The link under it is part of your own page, so readers see it even when the box does not load.

Privacy

The box sets no cookies and sends no visit statistics. The browser of whoever views the page fetches the weather from Open-Meteo for the position of the water. The position of the reader is not sent. Privacy on Finnfisk
