Skjåk Almenning (Skjåk)

The licence covers all lakes and rivers in Skjåk municipality, more than 230 lakes and more than 250 km of river, and most of the area is protected as Breheimen and Reinheimen national parks. All lakes hold brown trout, and Røyetjønn also holds Arctic char. The Otta follows national road 15 through all of Skjåk and holds grayling over 40 cm from Ofossen to the Lom border, but snow and glacier melt make the river big in summer, and glacial silt colours Pollvatnet turquoise in warm spells. North of Bismo a road goes up to Aursjoen (1098 m above sea level), and further in lies Leirungsvatnet (1370 m above sea level), which is stocked every year.

Gear and lures

  • Spinning

Light spinning in the mountain lakes

Small spoons and spinners from shore. Many lakes lie so high that the ice-free period lasts only a few weeks, and the best time for high-mountain fishing is from mid-July through August.

  • Fly

Fly in the Otta and the Tundra

The Otta from Pollfoss down to the outlet of Pollvatnet suits fly fishing very well, and the Tundra suits rod and fly. Nymph for grayling in the lower Otta, best when the river is not too big, in April, May and from August.

  • Bait

    Worm in the tarns

Worm and float in small mountain tarns is easy for the family. Live and dead fish as bait are banned.
